What are the issues?

This page sets the stage for the main content of this web site - for viewing the ongoing controversies between the principals in this field. To do this, we have first to be clear about the underlying issues.

Susan Grundy's case study on Caravaggio yields one set of issues. David Hockney defines another set of issues. And a third viewpoint comes from the art historian James Elkins. We consider each in turn and then summarize what we have learned.
